Blooming This Week......Sadly Not Much

As fall progresses, not much is blooming in the garden.

Even some of my annuals have given up.

But not these impatients!

Most of them are still going strong.

This Cypress Vine is a new addition to the garden. 

It had a tough start and is finally blooming.

I'm hoping it reseeds freely so next year it will cover the ugly rusted fence.

These morning glories reach for the sky as they climb my tired hanging basket.

These baskets still look good despite the weeds growing through the fencing around them.

Who else is tired of pulling weeds?

Finally...Rain in the Garden

Like many parts of the country, it has been a long, hot, dry summer.

My garden was just barely hanging on even though I watered and watered.

Hose water can not compete with a good soaking rain.

Thanks to the remnants of hurricane Isaac, we had two days of rain!

Two whole days of downpours...followed by more downpours!

It puddled in the backyard!

It puddled in the side yard!

It over-flowed my rain water collection bins!

(This is a simple way to catch/save/use your gutter water for the drier times!)

It poured off the awnings and in the road!

It dripped from my fennel blooms!

It over-whelmed this morning glory bloom!

It knocked off flowers onto the plants below!

And it made the lichen on my bench stand out!

The sound was lovely and the air is fresh again!

The garden is (well) watered!

Blooming this Week ~ Magic Lilies and ?

It seems like only yesterday that I couldn't wait for my hydrangeas, peonies and lavender to bloom.

Now it is the end of summer and my favorites have bloomed and faded.

But a few flowers remain....

Magic lily!

Hard working zinnias!

Butterfly bushes!

Potted coreopsis!

Annual baskets!

Russian sage leaning out for some sun.

Its getting moved this fall to a sunnier location.

The kitty is a permanent fixture (and camera ham!).

Blooming This Week ~ Morning Glories

Not much is blooming in my late summer garden.

This is the time of year when I let the morning glories take over in my garden.

Blooming This Week ~ Pink Porch Flowers

This year I decided to use only pink flowers on my front porch. 

I also thought I would use pink annuals in the flower bed across the front of the house.

It's now well into summer and I must admit I've had mixed results.

The porch...

Its pink but not PINK!

Eh...

The impatiens baskets have the largest flowers I've ever seen and still not much impact.

I plant these bacopa every year, usually in white, and they always look so straggly. 

The pink is so pale they might as well be white. 

Next year I will try something different in these clay pots.

The bed of pink impatiens I planted across the front of the house is struggling in the heat and drought. 

Eh...

Maybe something new next year...?

This is my favorite every year no matter what I plant in it.

Guard kitty is always on guard.

Blooming This Week ~ The Secret Garden

I like to think that my garden is divided into sections. 

Some of these sections are more obvious than others, like the veggie garden or the potted flowers. 

Some are what I refer to as the secret garden.

This is the secret garden for the birds...

or the kitties when they need a drink.

This is the secret watering hole for the birds.

I love this view of my garden. 

Its the view I see every time I walk around the side of my house and under the low tree branches.

This is the secret garden of bright pink impatiens hiding under my garden bench. 

They fill in a hole I see when I sit at my table and chairs.

This is my secret tropical garden. 

Hot pink flowers and elephant ears lends a tropical feel to this section of my garden.

This is the secret garden of the garden bench.

A favorite spot of mine to sit and enjoy my secret garden.

Blooming This Week ~ Sunny Yellow

With last weeks 100+ degree heat 

I thought it would be nice to look at 

sunny yellow flowers in my garden.

I love how they add pops of bright color in the midst of all the green.

Starting with a few volunteers...

A future zucchini hides behind this bright spot in the garden.

They are huge!

Rebloomers are always welcome!

Blooming This Week ~ Pinks & Purples in my Garden

Despite the lack of rain and hot, H-O-T days, my garden is full of blooms! 

This is the time of summer when my garden is filled with pinks and purples.

Yum!

Coneflowers thrive in hot dry weather.

Can you smell the heavenly scent of this stargazer lily?

Yep, that's my black concrete kitty peeking from behind!

Wish I knew where to find the lavender honey this bee is gathering nectar for!
