Are your Spring Bulbs are Coming up in the Snow?

Do your spring flower bulbs look like this:

Don’t Panic!

Its okay.

Those warm days in January tricked spring blooming bulbs into thinking it was time to come up.

And, whew, that’s okay.

These bulbs are used to being outside in the cold and are unaffected by late winter snow and ice.

They will shake it off and still bloom this spring!

Flower of the Day - Ranunculus

Today's flower of the day is Ranunculus. This gorgeous double peony type flower is perfect for flower beds, rock gardens or containers. It's also wonderful for cut flower bouquets too! Plant this bulb in the spring for early summer blooms! This bulb needs to be lifted in the fall and saved for planting the following spring in zones 3-7.

Flower of the Day - Lavender Mountain Lilies

Today's flower of the day is Lavender Mountain Lilies. This bulb can be planted in the fall for late spring to early summer blooms. These lilies have dainty lavender colored flowers and look amazing in rock gardens and flower beds. They grow best in lucky zones 3-9.

Remember...if your ground is not frozen or covered in snow, you still have time to plant easy care bulbs!

Flower of the Day - Azure Grape Hyacinth

Today's flower of the day is a fall planted bulb, Azure Grape Hyacinth. If your ground is not frozen yet, you can still plant bulbs for spring blooms! Plant a few of these pretty hyacinths and they will spread into a gorgeous blue ground cover. They like sun or shade and grow best in lucky zones 4-9.

Today's flower of the day is a bulb, Drumstick Allium. Unless your ground is frozen (or snow covered!), it is not too late to plant spring flowering bulbs! Alliums add some excitement to spring gardens because of their unique round shape. Enjoy them in the garden, in fresh bouquets or as a dried flower year round. Drumstick Allium blooms in early summer in lucky zones 3-8.

Today's flower of the day is Queen of Night Tulip. This striking tulip is not a true black but a deep dark maroon red that looks almost black. Look for this tulip to bloom mid-to-late spring in lucky zones 3-8.

Flower of the Day - Allium Graceful

Today's flower of the day is Allium Graceful. Each bloom of this beauty is made up of 40 clusters or creamy white to plaest pink flowers with lavender stamens. So pretty! It blooms in early summer for lucky zones 3-9.

Flower of the Day - Cleome Senorita Rosalita

Today's flower of the day is Cleome Senorita Rosalita. This pretty annual has lavender-pink blooms from June through October. It grows 2-4 feet tall and grows best in full sun for all zones.

Holiday Bulbs After the Holidays

One of the perks of working for a gardening company is the free plants and bulbs they give us after the shipping season has ended. 

Right before Christmas I received left over holiday bulbs: amaryllis, narcissus and hyacinths. These came potted in basic plastic pots that would have shipped with decorative foil but did not come with them as free give-aways. So I bought some inexpensive copper colored pots and dug around on the back porch for some smaller clay pots to pretty up the plain plastic ones. 

So while you are out enjoying the post holiday sales, look for left over holiday bulbs to enjoy after the holidays. This is a great idea for bringing spring into your home a wee bit early!
