Successful Bulb & Perennial Flower Combos #3

Perennial flowers anchor our landscapes, but can take quite awhile before the blooms of some types appear each season. But what if the flowers of a different plant were to ride above those leaves early in the season, and then magically disappear just before the perennial’s flowers show up? That’s what happens when you drop the right Spring bulbs into the right kind of perennial.

Combo #3

Tulip ‘Negrita’ with Stachys byzantina

This combination has it all - extension of the blooming season, contrasting & complementary leaf color and texture, and the right timing for old leaf coverage. The purple tulip is excellent with the grey Lambs Ear.

Fall is a great time to plant spring blooming bulbs and perennial flowers!

  1. I'm a newbie gardener (I dabbled in bulbs & annuals some years back but that doesn't really count). One of my objectives in my garden is to find good pairings of perennials & bulbs. I was thinking mostly of the perennials as a way to camoflauge the bulbs' foilage as it yellows. Thanks for this --I'll be watching for future coupling suggestions. :-D
