Cottage Style Party & A Cozy Winter Update

This is the story of a cozy winter living room update.
An update in slow motion...

This was my living room back in September.
Note the fan in the window…yeah, this was taken awhile ago!

Yep, that's a kitty on the sofa kitty cover.

This was the other side of the room.
Note the heat vent on the floor bottom left.
I knew that for winter I would want the sofa closer to the heat vent.

So, I moved the shelves out and over by the window.
Look…kitty toys!

Then I moved the sofa away from the window and found a couple hundred thousand kitty toys hiding under it.

Here's the sofa flipped with the shelves and chair.
Eh.

I switched some pillows around and moved the coffee table in place.
Eh.

I hate a boxy room and love to move furniture away from walls.
Which is impossible in this small room full of doors.
Five doors.
And a wall of low-ish windows.

This wall had the only possibility of moving the sofa away from the wall.
So I angled it away from the wall which gave me room to put a floor lamp behind the sofa.
Normally I would like the print and clock a little lower but when you have 10' walls it's nice to fill the wall a bit.
Plus I just can't put more nail holes in the wall.

Still loving my screen painted with Ralph Lauren gold way back when you could buy it at Home Depot!
A true high/low job…expensive RL paint with cheap dollar store black paint.
Guess which one was the easiest to work with.
Yeah, it's a no brainer.

The faux fur throw has come in handy in this drafty old cottage!
The black rose pillow was a work giveaway.

The damask pillows came off my bed and the red velvet was a thrifted find I bring out every holiday.

The Target Eiffel lamp I found at the Goodwill a few years ago. New shade I found on clearance at Walmart.

The fabric ottoman opens for storage.
Nothing yet!
It was a neighborhood discount store find.

Originally I moved the chair into this corner.
But the blue drapes (tablecloths…woot!) and blue chair just didn't match with the color scheme on the other side of the room.

This is how this stayed until I pulled out the holiday stuff and brought home a Christmas tree.
The chair was too big for the tree and had to go.

So I moved the blue chair into the bedroom and brought out my rocking chair.
I folded over an off white curtain to cover the chair pad, piled on some pillows and a colorful throw.
Then I found these forgotten purple velvet curtains.
Since the ladder was out to decorate my tree I hung the curtains.
They're a little too short but I love the rich texture and color.
The print was in the kitchen but works better next to the drapes.

The shelf top is left free for kitties to lay in the sun beams.
(because, let's face it, they will rearrange your stuff to suit them)

The sunlight here lasts about 10 minutes in winter…sigh...

That's my cozy living room redo which I finally finished.
Some times I think ideas need to percolate on a back burner before everything clicks in to place!

Yep, that is a familiar theme in my cottage!

Hello Friends!

Welcome to this weeks

Cottage Style Party!

#81

It's still cold and it's still snowing
so it must still be winter.

{sigh}

Despite the fact that I finally finished flipping my living room for winter coziness, I'm still waiting for the first sign of spring.
I know it will be here sooner than later.
I'm hoping sooner!

What have you been up to this last cold week?

Let's see…

This is just a snippet of the cutest pinecone tea set!
I love the rustic pinecones with the crochet tablecloth.

Drop in to JoAnn's blog Scene Through My Eyes because you really need to see this whole tea set. The teapot is just so cute!

This lovely chocolate pot is just a small part of Magali's wonderful winter mantle. There's so much more to see: candles, roses, pinecones and a white feather wreath!

Visit The Little White House on the Seaside to see Magali's seaside fisherman's cottage in Brittany, France.
And take the tour!

This is such a gorgeous silver and aqua winter tablescape! I can see why Trisha wants to leave it up a little longer.

Head on over to American Honey Home to see the details of this table. You must see the deer plates, the cloche centerpiece and the ball jars as drinking glasses!

  2. Oh I love the living room redo - I wish I could redo mine. I have a heavy china cabinet and a heavy bookshelf that would take major effort to move - so I mostly have it one way and can only switch a few chairs around.

Thanks for the mention of my blog and tea set - it really is the cutest thing.

  4. Your kitties are well loved! You uncovered quite a nice stash of toys. ;)
Isn't it fun to work on a room until you get it just right? Yours is looking really cozy now.

  5. My husband and I are still laughing at the hoard of kitty toys you found. We just found a stack of mostly chewed rawhide bones under the den chair. Beautiful job changing your living room. Thanks for hosting.

  10. Wow, 5 doors in one room now that would be a nightmare for me! You have managed to arrange everything very well with all the constraints you have.

    1. LOL Christina! Since that photo was taken back in September, the kitty toys have disappeared again! Guess I'll find them when I move the sofa again.

  13. I had to chuckle at the stash of kitty toys. I love the rich colors you used in your living room. It looks so cozy. Great French lamp; the shade is perfect. Magali's winter mantel is wonderful. Thanks for hosting.

  14. I used to have a cat named ET. He lived to be 23 years old. He had cowboy chaps for markings and extra toes. I loved him dearly. I think your cat may have more toys than he had but close....Love your cottage style room. I do think the window with the bookcase and plants is a better plan for your winter comfort.

  15. Thank you so much for featuring my 18th century hot chocolate pot! I'm sorry to be late again, weeks are just a little crazy at work and I have a hard time keeping up with reading blogs after work. I laughed when I saw all the kitty toys! We don't have that many at the cottage, but I still find some every time I move furniture! The cats love playing with cork lids and I'm always afraid people will think I'm an alcoholic hiding them under my sofa!

    1. Diane you know me too well. Can't have any empty spaces especially when hiding spaces are at a premium in my small cottage!

  19. I love the switch around. I wish I could do something like that. I used to all the time but now I have too much stuff. Things have their place and it would be a huge thing to change around now. STill I do in the bedrooms sometimes. I love what you accomplished, also the kitty toys and shelf.

  20. Hi Janice! I decided to down size my junk hoard (see my Etsy shop for proof!) so I would have less to move around when the mood strikes me!

  21. Deb,

Thank you for the blog party. I love your broom. I had to laugh out loud at all of the cat toys from underneath your couch. It is so much like my house. Your Eiffle Tower lamp is wonderful. I can see so many Frenchy lampshades that you could use.
